Top 5 Things that are keeping me focused ….

I have had SO many questions, (okay 3) about how I am able to stay focused on getting this old body healthy.  I am going to attemtp to answer them and share some scary insight into how I am drudging through.  I have gotten some great advice, and relied on the tried and true, but I am no where close to being at my goal.. but I am headed into the direction that Dr. Bob (one of the genius men in my office) says will change my bad habits into healthy ones.  It only takes 21 days!

It's not a DIET!

I have had to stop thinking that the journey to healthy living is a DIET.  Four letter word.  I have had to retrain my mind to think that I am becoming aware of what is going in my mouth, what purpose it serves for my body and am I hungry or just eating emotionally?  I am working on lisening to my body, when it is hungry, content or full.  Trying to stop at content.  Weight Watchers helped me loose 75lbs after I had that gargantuan child of mine almost 18 years ago. (SHUT UP… Did I just say that?… wow, moving on!) so I have gone back to the basics.  I love, love love their new program.

MOVE THAT BUTT!

I know.  It bites.  Being over 40 means that my body is REALLY not 20 anymore.  I have to move to get things to move.  You might think I am nuts, but I LOVE the elliptical (shocker, isn't it?).  I started slow.  Medium incline and resistance for a mile or two and then slowly have worked up to the peak incline and resistance for an hour each day.  I average about 4/4.5 miles a day.  It's taken me about 5 weeks to get to that point.  (Check with the doc first!)  I then move to 100 ab crunches on the machine.  Seriously… I need some ab help.  The twin shelf is brutal… but it's deteriating. Thank goodness.  Every other day I work on my arms and back to help with the flubber..  I have considered a trainer.. my sis is using one 5 days a week in Qatar, but honestly, I just can't afford one right now. :-)  My gym is in the basement of our office so I really have it made.  (FREE)  It also helps that I am working out 5 days a week for 1.5 hours.

KEEP TRACK OF WHAT YOU EAT

This is amazing:  Weight Watchers I can not say enough about their online point tracking system.  It does take work and I do have to make sure I am recording everything.  Sometimes it gets frustrating… but REALLY…it's helping me stay focused.

ENCOURAGEMENT FROM COMMUNITY

It helps to have a few people in your corner and who are helping you to stay accountable.  I was really doing well this past summer when my sister was in the States.  We were working out together in the morning and it was working!  I got lazy after she went home and the hubs started traveling… SO, I have recruited some people to help me stay accountable.  It helps that I work for a Biotech Institute and am around people trying to be healthy..but it also helps to have my mom, my sister, my husband on the getting healthy program with me along with some new and old FB friends to cheer me on…. and tell me to persevere when I am having a rough time.

PRAYER

I also have constant conversations with my best friend, Jesus.  Really.  He has to do this through me or it won't work.  I know, cause I have tried it without him.  I want to be healthy, not look a certain way.  It would be nice to have a Jessica Biel body, but I never have looked like her.  Darn it.  I have a Dedra Herod body, and when it's healthy it's okay.. it works, it serves Him.  I want to have energy, to be able to serve my family and work a full time job and enjoy life.  I couldn't do that were I started from.  My goal is to loose 60lbs by my next birthday.  If Jesus sees fit and I do my part… we just might get there.  I've lost 15 pounds and 8.5 inches in 6 weeks.  We might just get there… Jesus and me.  It seems like a mountain…but he is a mountain mover!  But I am not going to do it without Him or do it without the focus being on Him.  That takes PRAYER!!!

So there you have it!  Tools, intentionality, prayer, accountability, community and obedience.  Not perfect every day, but when I fall down and hit the Rocky Road pit, I pick myself back up and get back on the road again.  If my body really does house the Holy Spirit, shouldn't I start acting and treating it like it does?  I think so.

23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:23-25 (NIV)
